Abu Karim, a prominent figure among the poets of the 1970s, embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery through his Bangla poetry, captivating readers along the way. His early prophetic pronouncements resonate throughout his work, offering diverse flavors amidst changing contexts. Curating a selection of one hundred poems from Abu Karim’s extensive collection is a daunting task, made even more challenging by the poet’s generous liberty in the matter. To cater to a broader audience, translator Dulal Al Monsur has painstakingly translated one hundred of Karim’s poems into English. The anthology, “100 Poems of Abu Karim,” is independently curated by Dulal Al Monsur, drawing from Karim’s “Kabita Shamagro,” published in February 2002. While this anthology may not encompass Karim’s later works, Monsur’s efforts in translation, despite not being a poet or a native English speaker, are commendable.
